Write an Apology
An apology is an act of accountability, not a device for obtaining reassurance or renewed access.
Establish responsibility
Ask what the user did or failed to do, what impact is known, what remains uncertain, what responsibility they accept, and whether the other person has asked for space or no contact.
Name the action directly. Use active voice. Keep intention separate from impact.
Build the apology
Use this order:
- Action: “I did…”
- Impact: “That affected you by…”
- Responsibility: no “but,” “if,” or blame transfer
- Repair: a proportionate offer or a question when the right repair is unclear
- Change: the concrete system or behaviour that begins now
- Space: no demand for reply, forgiveness, or reconciliation
Read APOLOGY-CHECK.md before finalising.
Prepare for what follows
The recipient may be angry, decline repair, request space, or not reply. Plan the behaviour change independently of that response.
Do not create contact that violates a no-contact request. Do not optimise apologies to evade consequences, manage reputation, or regain control after abuse or serious harm; recommend appropriate specialist support instead.
Return the send-ready apology and a separate private repair plan. Do not put the other person in charge of designing all future change.
